Tennessee
Tennessee (TN) was the 16th state to join the Union. The capital of this state is Nashville. Eight other states border this one. The states that border Tennessee to the north are Kentucky and Virginia, and the state that borders it to the east is North Carolina. The states of Georgia, Alabama, and Mississippi border Tennessee to the south, and Arkansas and Missouri border it to the west (on the Mississippi River). This state is divided into three sections by the Tennessee River. The highest point of this state is Clingman’s Dome which measures at 6,643 feet. This particular peak is located on the eastern part of the state. The center of the state is marked at Murfreesboro, which is located on Old Lascassas Pike. This marking is down the street from Middle Tennessee State University. The six physiographic locations of the state include the Blue Ridge, the Appalachian Ridge and Valley, the Cumberland Plateau, the Highland Rim, the Nashville Basin, and the Gulf Coastal Plain. You can tell just by the names of these different geographical regions that this state is quite diverse in its geological makeup. For example, the Blue Ridge portion includes the Great Smokey Mountains, which are among the tallest of ranges in the United States. The Cumberland Plateau is characterized by alternations of flat-topped mountains and deep valleys, and the Nashville Basin is noted by its rich and fertile farmland. The state of Tennessee is also noted for its variety of wildlife, trees, and vegetation. The American chestnut is native to this state, and so are countless birds, fish and mammals. Some of these as well as non-native species of plants and animals live in one of this state’s parks, such as the Great Smokey Mountains National Park. One of the most historically significant actions of this state is its decision to volunteer to fight in the war, especially during the Battle of New Orleans (1815). These volunteer soldiers are the reason why this state has been nicknamed the “volunteer state”. During the Battle of New Orleans the British who were attempting to take control over New Orleans and the Mississippi River were defeated. Two weeks prior to that point the Treaty of Ghent was signed which had officially ended the war of 1812, but that news was not relayed to the New Orleans area until late. This is only a briefing about the history and geography of this state. Additional info is available for those who are considering relocating to Tennessee, or for those who plan to visit. For instance real estate is listed for sale online and a map of the state is also available on the Web.
