Maryland
Sometimes homes are put up for sale in Maryland (MD). This is one place that many people would prefer to live or visit for a variety of reasons. Therefore, some real estate agents would consider the purchase of property in this state very worthwhile. One of Maryland’s strong suits is the fact that it is considered a leader in the life sciences field. This state currently has over 350 biotechnology outfits in the state. This provides opportunities for jobs for the right people. The FDA, the National Institute of Health, and the Howard Hughes Medical Institute also provide quite a bit of vocational opportunity for people who might find a job in this state. Institutions of higher learning in the state of Maryland include the state-run Maryland University John Hopkins University, some of the research centers mentioned in the previous paragraph. Besides all the educational and vocational opportunity this state has to offer, it is also considered a state that offers quite a few entertainment and tourism possibilities. In fact, there are several attractions that are operated by the National Park Service that exist in this state. Some of the natural areas of interest in Maryland include the Appalachian Nature Scenic Trail, Fort Mc Henry National Monument and Historic Shrine, and Fort Washington Park. In one or more of these areas as well as in other areas not mentioned in this article there are quite a bit of a variety of both plant and animal life in this area. Some of the trees that grow in Maryland currently include the White Oak, as well as a variety of species of pines and maples. This state also is home to a high population of deer, which live in the woody mountain areas of the state (to the West). In the Chesapeake Bay a large number of blue crabs can be found (a cash crop), and tobacco is found in this area as well (also grown as a cash crop). Maryland is a very important part of early American history. During the war of 1812 the British tried to seize the port of Baltimore, which was guarded by Fort Mc Henry. During this time the composer Francis Scott Key had created the Star Spangled Banner. Maryland was successful in defending that Baltimore port. However, they were also in some ways supportive of the Confederates. They did not secede from the Union, however. Part of the reason they may not have seceded is because when President Lincoln was in office he proceeded to even have people jailed if they supported the Confederate cause. It was not to long after this time that slavery was then abolished. The abolition of slavery took place in the year 1863 shortly after the Emancipation Proclamation was made by the president.
