San Antonio

San Antonio is the second largest city (population-wise) in the state of Texas. This city’s presence is largely influenced by the two major military bases that are stationed within it (Lackland and Randolph Air Force Bases).

San Antonio History

Native Americans used to live in the San Antonio River area before it was inhabited by the Spanish in the year 1691. The Natives called the San Antonio River Yanaguana which is translated into English as "refreshing waters”.

What inspired the Spanish name change of the Yanaguana was the fact that the Spanish took this particular river over on the day of the Saint Antonio feast (a celebration to honor Saint Anthony of Lisbon and Padua). The city of San Antonio was officially founded in the year 1718.

One of the most popular attractions of this area is the Antonio River Walk. Honeymoon couples and families enjoy the natural scenery along the river in both the daytime and the night. Located in the vicinity of the River Walk is the site of the Battle of the Alamo, which is where people can learn about the vicious battle between Texas and Mexico.

During Alamo battle (1835) there were numerous casualties suffered. When this battle ended in 1836, Texas had officially declared Independence from the country of Mexico. Therefore, the Alamo battle site is one of the most significant tourist sites in all of Texas.
