Memphis
Memphis is the seat of Shelby County, which is in Tennessee. This is the largest city in the state. The population of Memphis as of the 2000 census is approximately 680, 768. This number is likely to be much larger as of the year 2010. The City of Memphis is located in the western portion of Tennessee, above the Mississippi River (on the Lower Chickasaw Bluff). It is also located at the mouth of the Wolf River. Several Fortune 500 company headquarters are located in the city of Memphis. Some of those companies include FedEX, International Paper, AutoZone, and ServiceMaster. There are also two Fortune 1000 companies in this area, and two of the Fortune 500 companies (FedEx and International Paper) are also considered Fortune 100 companies. Memphis is noted for having quality educational opportunities at all levels. The children and teens of this city are served by the Memphis City Schools. Several higher learning institutions are located in this area as well. The University of Memphis is one school that is open to adults of all ages. This is a state-run school. Private colleges also exist in this state as well, and some of these are Christian schools. One of these is called the Christian Brothers University. There is also a fine medical facility that exists in this city, and that is called the St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital. Peter Doherty is on staff at this hospital. He had won a Nobel Prize in 1996. The city of Memphis also is noted for having the third-oldest dentist college in the United States (the oldest in the South). This particular school was founded in the year 1978. This city also is home to many museums and art galleries. One of the most well-known is the National Civil Rights Museum. This was the Lorraine Motel at one time, and is the site of where Martin Luther King Jr. was assassinated. One of the other renowned museums of Memphis is the Memphis Brooks Museum of Art, which is the oldest fine arts museum of the state of Tennessee. A visual arts museum of high interest houses collections of works by Monet, Degas, and Renoir. This is called the Dixie Gallery and Gardens. There is also a museum that is run by the University of Memphis that contains some ancient Egyptian artifacts. Graceland is also located in this city, and this is the home of the former Rock ‘N Roll star Elvis Presley.
