Key west

Key West is considered the southernmost city of Florida, and of the continental United States. This city is and is located in Monroe County, and is the seat of that county as well.

Key West is a little less than 130 miles Southwest of Miami, Florida. Those who are looking for Key West need to remember that the city of Miami is not Miami Beach, Florida. These two locations are often confused from one another.

Quite a few cruise ship routes end in Key West, or at least have Key West on their itinerary list. Naval aviation travel also takes place quite a bit in this location as well.

Key West Points Of Interest

One of the attractions of this area is Old Town Key West. Quite a few visitors will rent a bike to tour this area. Plenty of historical sites and buildings could pique a traveling person or group’s interest for hours. Some of these visitors will also participate in the Sunset Celebration at Mallory Square.

One of the other main interests attracting tourists is the Key West Botanical Forest and Garden. This particular garden is frost free and is said to contain quite a few “champion tree” species.

A second botanical Garden that is located in the Key West area is called the Nancy Forrester’s Secret Garden. This one features rainforests, and covers an area of about 4,000 square meters.
Nearby there is also a humongous butterfly habitat. This particular ecosystem covers an area of about 5,000 square feet.

Memorials And Museums

Visitors of Key West can also view the AIDS memorial located at White Street Pier. This one is an effort to remember both the affect of this disease as well as those who have suffered this condition.

Two museums that are of interest to quite a few people include the Mel Fisher Maritime Museum and the Key West Lighthouse Keepers and Quarters Museum. The Mel Fisher museum displays gold, silver, and other treasures that have been confiscated from shipwrecks over a period of many years. The Lighthouse Keepers Museum preserves a famous lighthouse that was built in 1847.

For those who do not know this, Ernest Hemingway’s home is located in Key West as well. Visitors are welcome to tour it during their stay in Florida.

Key west Vacation rentals are located all over this city. People either rent these by the day, week, or month, or they purchase a piece of property. Those who rent these houses are ones that also participate in activity that takes place in one of the resorts that is located in this area of Florida.

Other Key West Events

Fantasy Fest and Race Week are two other Key West events that travelers come to this area to see. Fantasy Fest is a benefit event for helping AIDS patients. This event is like one big beach party with activities for all ages (almost anyway).

Race Week is a major sail racing event. Spectators and sailors alike experience the thrill and excitement of this renowned water racing event.
